Ultimately your child’s safety is up to you.

You can’t totally redesign your home to accommodate your new bundle of joy, but what you can do is be vigilant.

The best thing to do to really get an idea of the dangers your child or children might face is to get down to their level. Quite literally this means to get down on your hands and knees in every room/area to access the hazards in your house.

It doesn’t have to cost a fortune and I am also a firm believer on not cutting costs when it comes to safety. In some instances it is as simple as removing the hazard completely. For example I had a lot of glass ornaments on display; I just packed them away in some boxes until my little boy was old enough to know not to touch.

Here are seven basic child safety tips:

1. Fence any pools, spas or water features with self-closing gates. Water is a silent killer. Always bear in mind a child can drown in 5cm of water.

2. Safety barriers or gates for items such as steps, fires, ovens, or to restrict access to certain areas or rooms in your house.

3. Smoke alarms are critical to advise you of any smoke danger.

4. Fence or child safety locks to restrict access to outside, driveways or dangerous areas outside.

5. Child safety latches, catches, electric plug protectors. Dangerous products, chemicals and medicines need to be locked out of reach. Electric plugs need to be made safe from small fingers or toys.

6. Hot Water tap/faucet temperature protectors. A child’s skin can be scalded in less than a second.

7. Vertical blinds and certain cords are a serious hazard to babies, toddlers and small children. Ensure all cords are out of reach of children. Remove any furniture that can be used to climb and reach cords. Cords can be replaced with wands or make sure the cord is secured at least 160cm (1600mm) off the ground. We have draw string blinds in our master bedroom and we have the cord wrapped around a hook/cleat fixed approximately 200cm (2000mm), these can be purchased from the hardware store Other cord protectors, windups etc. can be purchased to aid in your child’s safety. Listed above are just seven safety suggestions. Child safety is very important lets all do our best to protect our children.

Do you understand your child’s High School learning environment?

Consider their current learning environment at school; a class environment with well over 15 to 20 students, and a single teacher, then consider the amount of distractions that might be present in this type of learning environment. How may this influence your son/daughter’s concentration, attentiveness and overall learning and memory attainment in school? Consider their academic outcome; if lessons are being taught in school, and they are unable to grasp them, who can they turn to if their school teachers are unable to cater to their individual needs or provide them with prompt assistance? Most students are unable to achieve their full academic potential because obstacles at their place of learning (at school) are preventing them from achieving full effective learning.

High School Tuition or Academic Tuition

Fortunately, there are tuition solutions for your son/daughter. Tuition can be very affordable and very effective in bridging learning gaps and on furthering knowledge and understanding from what they have already learnt. In fact, there are many parents who recommend tuition to their child as the means to provide them with higher learning; helpful in keeping their son/daughter more abreast at school. There are also many parents who use tuition as the means for support, to aid with their child’s general difficulties at school, to improve weaker areas in their school subjects.

It is not uncommon for High School students in years 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 to require additional assistance in High School subjects such as in Maths, English, Physics and Chemistry, or for homework and assignment help or with revision for upcoming exams. It is also not uncommon for teachers to recommend out of school tutoring to their students to the parents. In some cases, students who are struggling to cope academically at school, hide their difficulties from their parents and teachers, thinking that if they study harder, or if they let time to pass, it would work out in the end. Often times this never works, and it may elevate the problem; it can become worse. These students can end up “lagging” behind in class or ultimately, might grow up with lost of passion and motivation for learning and education. Fortunately for parents, there are steps you can take to prevent this from occurring.

Does your son/daughter need High School Tuition or Academic Tuition?

High School tuition or Academic tuition is an important step in ensuring that your son/daughter between secondary years 8 to 12 is receiving the most effective means of quality education possible in their High School academic years. There are a few steps you can take towards better understanding your child’s academic needs and towards improving their academic potential:

Talk to your son/daughter and find out if they are experiencing difficulties with their academic achievements at school. You may need to assess their grades, and be very patient, compassionate and understanding. If possible, talk to their teachers and close friends at school to find out more about their academic achievements and how well they are doing in class.

Find out which subjects that your son/daughter excels in, and which subjects he/she requires more help with. It is usual for students to experience difficulty with some subjects and not others. This can be for a variety of reasons such as lack of interest in these subjects, inadequate teaching standards from the subject’s teachers, subjects might be too challenging for their academic year level, or their learning environments might be too distracting.
